Lubrication

Proper greasing is very important to guarantee long life and working continuity of a transmission chain . Infact, while functioning, the contact surfaces pin/bush and bush/roller, roll one with respect to the other and since these surfaces are hardened by heat treatments and rectified , this grade of finishing would be immediately destroyed without a protective film of grease.

Furthermore, lubrication is also necessary between the interior face of the inner link plates, as well as , between the interior faces of the chain plates and the sides of the spur wheel teeth.

Lubrication protects the chain from oxidation and corrosion , and reduces transmission noisiness.

The film of oil, present in the spaces between the contact surfaces , cushions any eventual tearing borne by the chain because of sudden load variations.

An effective lubrication can contribute by itself and in an essential way ,to the attainment of the theoretic life of the chain: however, the lubricant can complete its action only when it reaches the right points and in the exact quantity.

Choice of Lubricant

A very fluid mineral oil , free from acid and correctly filtered , represents the best for chain greasing; dense and greasy oil is not usually recommended.

Benefits of good lubrication

The lubricant in use must have the following properties:

  • it must be sufficiently fluid to penetrate the spaces between the contact surfaces, pin-bush and bush-roller;
  • it must be sufficiently resistant , to continuously guarantee a separating film between the working surfaces;
  • it mustn’t contain corrosive substances
  • it must keep its oiling properties at the conditions of the environment in which its functioning;

For normal transmissions, we recommend the use of a good mineral oil; Working conditions, such as: transmitted power, revolutions per minute, temperature and type of grease, determine the requested viscosity.

Remember that an increase in the temperature reduces the oil viscosity and therefore, its relative oiling properties.

Special lubrications

On request, the chains can be lubricated with specific products according to the needs of the various applications.

Types of Lubrication

In general, the pre-lubrication of the chains in Rosa Catene is carried out by immersion, while on site on the system it can be of the following type:

  • Periodic manual greasing
  • Drop greasing
  • Oil bath or disk lubrication
  • Forced circulation lubrication
